School Field Trips to Maroon Bells
Here is what you need to know:
The Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES) schedules all field trips for the Maroon Bells through a collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). School groups can request a field trip date using the form below. Scheduling your field trip allows USFS to prepare for your visit, ensuring smooth bus drop-off and parking. Our goal with this system is to provide a safer and more memorable experience for your students and others visiting this inspiring place. Thank you for your cooperation!
Please keep the following in mind:
- Access to Crater Lake and any other trail in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness is only available for groups with fewer than 10 people. Any larger group requires a Special Use Permit through USFS.
- There is a maximum of one bus and one car allowed.
- Two school groups are allowed per day if timing enables them to be separate (one in the morning and one in the afternoon).
- The day use picnic tables and East Maroon Portal are good lunch spots and gathering locations, if they are not already occupied or reserved.
- The USFS recommends hiking East Maroon Portal to Maroon Lake. This route is outside of the wilderness boundary.
- All travel and sitting must be on designated trails and not on vegetation.
- Date requests are first come, first served.
- There is currently no running water at the Maroon Bells. Please bring plenty of extra drinking water and hand sanitizer. There are toilets by the day-use parking lot.
